As a stand alone film I love it, as part of the Alien franchise, I struggle to reconcile it.

The following contains spoilers... you have been warned!

Ok lets start with a quick run down of the creation of the alien, and the involvement of the "Engineers".

In the opening scene we see a lone Engineer performing some form of ritual on earth... by ingesting the black goo the engineer de-constructs (at a DNA level we are shown) with the result that he kick starts the creation of life on earth (we'll overlook the fact he fell into water as splitting ovum, and just accept that proto-life evolved from there).

This sets up the fact that (big leap of faith here) the Engineers consider themselves some sort of life creating gods, and perform self sacrifice in there "holy mission" to create life on different planets (self sacrifice is necessary to fulfil the law of conservation of energy).

Later when the crew discover the cannisters of black goo we note that there are worms in the ground. When the cannisters leak their DNA is what gives rise to the "white worm" aliens.

When Shaw is impregnated by her infected husband the squid like alien takes its DNA from a gamete, hence it's requirement to impregnate a host.

However this is where I struggle to reconcile the remainder of the film.

Why does the impregnated alien take on the "alien" form?

Why do the white worms attack and essentially zombiefy it's prey?

Why do they have acid for blood?

Why were the Engineers running away? (I don't buy the bio-weapon theory)?

Why did the Engineers direct us to the planet?

So in summary my theory behind the film is that it's all an accident caused by these Engineers being over complacent in their "holy mission" to seed the universe, which accidentally created monsters by using the wrong DNA. Only now just had a chance to fit it out in the bedroom.

I can see now why it was going so cheap. Although it's complete, because it's for a PC so it has no amp, so anything I plug into it comes out in Stereo :(

However I had a brainwave... Why not run it through a PC?

Sound from the PC comes out in glorious 5.1 and oh my god it's powerful... Only have to barely turn the dial to fill the room!

Sadly though the sound card can't process the stereo signal from the TV into virtual surround :( so that problem still exists. So question is whether to buy an amp, or wire the PC video out to the TV?

Roamingjayhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05322934268274854830noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8250275317035673750.post-5759889308852905812011-11-11T11:11:00.000+00:002011-11-11T11:11:24.797+00:00Pocky Time

11:11 11/11/11 so many sticks of pocky

Not to forget the most important fact, that today is Armistice Day.

They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old:
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember them.

From Laurence Binyon's poem For the Fallen, written in September
1914

Roamingjayhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05322934268274854830noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8250275317035673750.post-92226369157695853542011-11-08T22:49:00.002+00:002011-11-09T07:22:10.954+00:00I Wii(l) be fit :)With the aid of the Wii fit and some good old fashioned dieting I'm going to be a changed man... She dived down, then they copied. They all repeated this several times in different places on the pond. Then went and perched on a lamppost to rest, came back and did it again, this time from nearly twice the height.

Once they’d repeated this the mother flew off and her young followed her apparently racing one another to catch up to her :-)Roamingjayhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05322934268274854830noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8250275317035673750.post-83239835086547798622011-02-12T15:39:00.000+00:002011-03-18T23:34:39.031+00:00Hattalica

Japanese Metallica tribute band... need I say any more?Roamingjayhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05322934268274854830noreply@blogger.com5tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8250275317035673750.post-68319957233624572272011-02-12T13:28:00.000+00:002011-03-19T00:22:34.741+00:00Gin AnyoneGin, stored in a bath, served from a Teapot by a Fusilier in Central London... you'd lock me up and call me crazy... if I didn't have pictures!

Roamingjayhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05322934268274854830noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8250275317035673750.post-10888172594619595842011-02-12T08:33:00.000+00:002011-03-19T00:36:49.344+00:00Tank Tracks

New or old? Just been more active elsewhere.

Mainly this is the fault of the real world... I mustn't complain, I've been doing some pretty interesting things lately, filming for Alternative Karaoke:

Also I've been going out to Oxfords famous Intrusion Goth night and getting about over the Christmas break (and getting stuck in it see here). Hopefully that'll change, but then I say that every year!

This year I'll hopefully have more to write about and fingers crossed I'll somehow make the time to do it... reason is I'm trying to make a business out of a hobby... and no not this blog (no one in their right mind would pay me for these ramblings). But instead my videoing skills. Now I'll be the first to be modest and say I'm no James Cameron, but I know my Camcorder pretty well, and it's a killer piece of equipment (yeah it's no 2k 3D jobby... I can't justify the expense of something like that), with the addition of a 0.7x wide angle lens and a compressor microphone (courtesy of my parents for Birthday and Christmas) and a truly superb monopod and shoulder mount (courtesy of Nomis Mum and Step Dad... yes I'm fully aware I will look a total wally wearing the shoulder mount), I'm now fully geared up to get right into the thick of it at conventions, gigs and other events.

I love videoing... to the point that even a Japanese tourist would say is excessive. So to get paid for it is a dream, and one that's either impossible, or extremely far off. So now here's the thing... if you're in a band, run an event/convention or anything that would benefit from a video of some sort, drop me a line. I'll take on all comers, and if you're willing to give me a free ticket to get in I'll do it for nothing... and that includes my skills editing and transforming whatever it is into a fully fledged trailer/YouTube clip/music video/film/DVD or everything in between and beyond. Whatever you want I can give it 100% All I ask is the opportunity to hone my skills. And you know what... I hope my work will either make whoever I work with famous or both of us.

A good friend of mine is helping me out by making a website just for this purpose and to showcase my work... this will eventually be online at www.roamingjay.co.uk but my work can always be found on www.youtube.com/roamingjay and occasionally I'll mention it on here.

So if you're reading this and not already bored to tears why not try me out... in an economy like today's getting something for free is not something you see every day!Roamingjayhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05322934268274854830noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8250275317035673750.post-91065444599347957002011-01-01T14:06:00.000+00:002011-03-18T23:22:12.589+00:00Mini AbominationNow while I adore the original Mini, I genuinely look at the new Mini and think... "well it's the best they can do with current safety legislation"... and then exclaim that it's massive! And deserves the name Medium as opposed to Mini.

I'd heard of the Mini Coutryman... but until now I'd never seen one. And the first thing that popped into my mind? I think that they suit certain styles. And styling one after a New Mini just horrifies me, it's the complete opposite of the original concept of the Mini. And it didn't let me down on expectations... it is a very beautifully rendered CGI film, with exquisite attention to detail (the feathers ruffled when the wind blew). One scene immediately springs to mind where they're flying through a storm in slow motion, the 3D rendered CGI raindrops and the "wet bedraggled look" of the owls was beyond description... if it's still on where you are go see it!

This was our first outing with the Unlimited <insert>cards from Cineworld, and hopefully the first of many, as the more you use them the better value they become. It was a really good experience being able to just pick the film hand over our passes and only pay a token £1.50 each for the privilege of a 3D film. The only thing that besmirched the experience was a member of the audience.

Where we decided to sit (which being late was a very quick selection) was roughly in the middle, and directly in front of a father and his 2 sons. Aside from them and us there was probably another 4 people in the cinema (owing mainly to the early performance and the fact the film was at the end of its run). As with all cinemas (at least when you're not in outrageously priced "first class" seats) the seats are far too close together and the inevitable fidgeting results in the person in front getting jostled, this is par for the course, and by and large I overlook it. If it becomes a regular occurrence, a quick look around is usually enough to shame the offender into staying still. Sadly in this instance it wasn't... I come to the conclusion the guy behind me was blissfully ignorant to the fact his son (who at the age of ~8 years old was sitting on his lap) was frequently banging the back of Nomis chair. So after a couple of jostles in rapid succession I turned around and exclaimed "seriously mate, please could you stop kicking the chair" to which he replied something along the lines of "why don't you move?". Thinking this was enough to point out what was occurring and he'd have the decency to either sit his son on a seat properly (of which there were hundreds) I turned around and resumed watching the film... only to feel yet another nudge in the back of Nomi's chair. Quickly spinning around I said "Why don't you move" to which he replied "we were here first"... now seriously am I in the wrong here? Shouldn't the offending party in something like this move away, not the victim? He knew what was going on and that it was his fault yet was refusing to do anything about it. So I stood up and said "fine" and promptly sat behind him and rather childishly (although not entirely deliberately) gently kicked the back of his chair :-) Oh what a feeling as he stomped off to get the manager :-) Eventually when he came back with the manager in tow I explained the situation calmly to the manager (who was very calm and collected) whist the other guy ranted and raved. Eventually after hearing my side of the story the manager advocated that "you're both here to enjoy the film, so can we all just sit down?" to which I replied "certainly... and I (emphasis on the I) promise not to kick the back of your chair mate". The rest of the film went on with us sitting behind him, and without incident. When we left after watching all the credits we bumped into the manager I had spoken to earlier, and apologised for the display and that how I was amazed at how idiotic some people could be. Thankfully he agreed with me.Roamingjayhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05322934268274854830noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8250275317035673750.post-22599406058483081372010-11-06T11:52:00.003+00:002010-11-10T23:53:00.265+00:00On the set of the Call Cutter Trailer

I've acted a bit in the past, but only stuff I've scripted and "on stage" at an anime convention, mostly it's been about the costume and "getting a laugh". This time however it was serious, as I was going to be in front of a video camera, with a crew and acting out a scene I had to get perfect. And most importantly I had to look serious and natural, and not scared rigid like I do usually.
I was vastly helped by the fact I only had to act alongside Nomi and I could ad lib my part as much as I liked as long as I got the general import of it right, I wont go into details spoil it for anyone as I want everyone to see the final cut (watch this space). Suffice to say I was surprised at how I managed to totally block out the fact there was the director, a camera, a sound guy, a makeup girl and possibly a whole host of other people in the room with us and totally focus on the acting. I've never felt a buzz quite like it, and was sad when after several takes the director had got what he wanted.

There was more fun to come though, as we then had to go and get more makeup applied in the form of grisly wounds and copious amounts of blood, the director was thrilled when I said to the makeup girl "yeah just cover me in it I've got a change of clothes with me". Hence the fact I'm covered in blood from having my throat cut :-)

The next scene I thought was going to be far easier to act as all I had to do was lie there and pretend to be dead... wrong, I had to remain perfectly still with eyes open propped up uncomfortably. But it was such fun being covered in all the fake stage blood (which is actually corn syrup and tastes really nice!).

And that was our scenes done... and I must say that was the most fun I've ever had with my trousers up :-) And I can't wait to see the results, and perhaps reprise my role in the film proper and or take up any other offers for parts in other films.
On a side note whilst waiting for my makeup to be done I twittered what I was doing and got a few quizzical "what're you up to?" responses, of which I replied "I'm an extra in a film". That evening after we got home the lead in the film (a good friend of Nomis) told me what a good job he thought I'd done and that I wasn't an extra, but "an ACTOR". I can think of no higher praise than to receive that comment from Rob as he is a superb actor both on stage and on screen, and for him to consider me as such really touched me and made me feel really emotional.
Roamingjayhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05322934268274854830noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8250275317035673750.post-40095403579805065652010-10-30T19:51:00.000+01:002010-11-14T14:34:38.820+00:00Finding Nemo Tank

The Chessington World of Adventures Hotel has a fish tank in the lobby with what can only be described as a replica of Finding Nemo :) the only fish missing is a cleaning shrimp :(Roamingjayhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05322934268274854830noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8250275317035673750.post-18501720043583727702010-10-30T18:17:00.000+01:002010-11-14T14:32:26.686+00:00Go on... suck it!

"My god that can't be real!"
